Your Offshore Guide

INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT USING OFFSHORE PRODUCTS

Apart from the vast number of offshore funds you can access direct, there are a number of innovative products you can obtain offshore which use offshore funds as the underlying investment while offering an overall product which can cut down on investment administration, increase tax efficiency and are generally geared to reach a specific investment goal. The majority of these more innovative products are offered by life companies and range from relatively simple single premium and regular premium savings plans to portfolio bonds and guaranteed or protected products.

Most of these products will include a life cover wrap. The performance of such products depends on the choice of the underlying investment.

Many groups will offer a wide choice of in-house funds which are grouped according to risk profile.

Increasingly, however, more and more groups are recognising that investors may not be happy to be limited to groups' in-house funds. This has seen a recent wave of life groups providing links to the funds of top performing investment groups.

Many insurance companies offering these products are based in the Isle of Man, the islands of Jersey and Guernsey, and Luxembourg. Isle of Man-based Royal Skandia was the pioneer in offering an extensive range of links to investment houses to be used as the investment base for its products. Other insurance groups which now offer outside links include Clerical Medical International, Sun Life International, Royal & Sun Alliance, and Scottish Provident

International. A further innovation in terms of offshore life group products has been the increase in protected or secure products. These products will typically limit the downside of any investment. Scottish Life International, Sun Life International and Albany International offer protected products.

A brief description of a number of these products is outlined below. The choice of product will very much depend on your individual circumstances and your investment goal. The useful checklist at the end of this chapter will help sift through the product options when assessing your investment goals.
